Green Card Application Social Security Number

Immigrants Can Now Apply for a Green Card and Social Security Number Together

On August 9, 2021, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) introduced a major update that makes the immigration process more convenient for applicants. Effective immediately, individuals applying for permanent residency (a green card) can also apply for their Social Security Number (SSN) or request a replacement card at the same time.

This streamlined process comes from a new partnership between USCIS and the Social Security Administration (SSA), an initiative supported by the Biden Administration. Before this update, applicants had to submit their Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence

or Adjust Status, and then visit a Social Security Office separately to apply for an SSN—adding weeks or months to their immigration timeline. With this change, USCIS will update Form I-485 to reflect the new option, and applicants will not face any additional filing fees.

Why This Change Matters

“This expansion of our partnership with the Social Security Administration illustrates our commitment to operating our nation’s immigration system more efficiently to save applicants time,” explained USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddou. She emphasized that eliminating unnecessary bureaucracy and enhancing cooperation across federal agencies is a top priority for USCIS and the Biden-Harris administration.

By aligning these two critical processes, immigrants can now save valuable time and avoid unnecessary paperwork, helping them settle and work in the United States more quickly.

How to Apply for a Green Card and Social Security Number at the Same Time

According to USCIS, approximately 576,000 Form I-485 applications are filed each year. Once USCIS approves your I-485, the agency will automatically send your information electronically to the Social Security Administration. The SSA will then issue you an original SSN or a replacement card, depending on your individual situation.

This means green card applicants will no longer need to schedule an appointment or make a separate trip to the Social Security Office, significantly reducing delays and helping new permanent residents begin their lives in the U.S. without unnecessary hurdles.

Filing Fee for Form I-485

The filing fee for Form I-485 remains unchanged under this new system. Applicants will pay the same fee they would have previously, without any additional costs associated with requesting a Social Security Number during the green card application process.
