Recommendation Letter for National Interest Waiver (NIW)

RE: Form I-140 Petition of EB2 NIW (National Interest Waiver) for [The petitioner]

To whom it may concern;

It is a true pleasure to write this recommendation letter for the EB2 NIW (National Interest Waiver) petition of Dr. ______________ ______________, who is currently working as a PostDoc in Professor ___________’s group at the University of ____________________. He is, without question, one of the most productive researchers I have ever known.

As for my qualifications to provide this evaluation, I am _____________. I received my Bachelor of Science from ______________ in __. I received my Ph.D. in __ from the University of ___________, in _________. In __, I joined the faculty of the University of _________, where I stayed until 2015, before joining the University of _______ as a professor of Chemistry. I have over 200 publications in the scientific literature and hold over 22 US patents. I am a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Some of my notable awards include: ACS Award in _________ Chemistry (1992), ________ Section ACS Distinguished Speaker Award (1992), ACS A. C. Cope Scholar Award (1994), ____ Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Fellowship (1995), American Academy of Arts and Sciences Fellow, (1996),  ………….

Being in close contact with Dr. ______________, and discussing various scientific projects with him, I quickly realized how experienced and innovative he is. Up to now, he has conducted numerous and completely different projects.  I can confidently assert that running each of them very well does indeed require a unique capability which in my expert opinion is called true research capability, for which years of industrial and academic activities have to be taken, for which energy and time have to be devoted, and, most importantly, for which creation and innovation have to be offered. These are the unique features that Dr. ______________ possesses, distinguishing him from his other peers.

Dr. ____________ research area can be divided into four distinct yet interconnected areas of soft matter as follows. 1) Synthesis of Ziegler-Natta catalyst and polyolefins; 2) Stimuli-responsive hydrogels and microgels; 3) Synthesis of well-defined macromolecules by controlled living polymerization; 4) Synthesis and design of soft and ultra-soft elastomers.

As his Ph.D. project, Dr. ______________ worked on an industrial project, and designed a pilot plant for catalyst screening. During his Ph.D., he gained invaluable experience with the polymerization of olefins and the synthesis of Ziegler-Natta catalysts, which are the most complex types of catalysts in industrial plants. He designed and constructed a continuous polyolefin pilot plant in 2006 for ethylene and propylene polymerization with organo-metallic catalysts.

After that, he continued his researches in ________ National University, and worked on temperature-sensitive polymers and hydrogels based on Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide). Also, he became an expert in establishing dynamic bonds for fabrication of physically crosslinked polymer networks. As an example, he established hydrogen bonding in copolymers of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and dopamine methacrylate, and produced a reversible, self-healing network in aprotic solvents. The produced reversible organogel can self-encapsulate several components such as drugs due to thermosensitivity of the used copolymer. The proposed system also offered dual-targeted and controlled drug delivery & release by lowering release kinetics through both supramolecular bonding and modulus increase.

His subsequent works on stimuli-responsive hydrogels were conducted at __________ on zwitterionic microgels. He has single-handedly synthesized monodisperse zwitterionic microgels in the size range of 300 to 1000 nm. This is a breakthrough in my view as the production of such microgels in aqueous media was believed to be close to impossible. Having a profound and detailed insight into the effect of different polymerization parameters allowed him to synthesize these microgels successfully, tune the size precisely, and above all, incorporate various functional groups effectively. He has used these microgels for surface modification, in-situ synthesis of metallic nanoparticles, and encapsulation of 6M Hydrochloric acid, each of which is considered as groundbreaking research in its scope.

Furthermore he is an expert in controlled living polymerization techniques by which one can design and tailor a wide variety of macromolecular architectures such as bottlebrush, comb-like chains, di- and tri-block copolymers, etc. Using his strong background in such a complicated polymerization method, he substantially contributed to the design of one of the most state-of-the-art types of soft matter: solvent-free, supersoft, and superelastic bottlebrush melts and networks, on which he and his colleagues have recently published a paper in Nature Materials (Nature Materials 15, 183–189, 2016). This novel material will without a shadow of doubt attract a great deal of attention in the near future.

He has also worked on the design of dielectric actuators by synthesizing soft-elastomers based on well-designed networks with bottlebrush polymer chains. The actuation coefficient of the synthesized reversible polymer networks is about 5 times larger than that of the available dielectric elastomers such as VHB made by 3M Company, USA.  This invention has a promising future in some applications such as artificial muscle making.

Exploring a wide range of topics in polymer science has provided him an excellent background with which he can easily solve a broad spectrum of problems. These efforts have enabled him to readily take on the most challenging areas of studies in polymer science from composite science to actuating materials. It has also brought with him a great ability of how to effectively and cleverly combine diverse areas in order to come up with novel research ideas. To date, having done such a broad range of different research has strengthened him to such an extent he has become who he is today, and will undoubtedly continue the same way.

In sum, I am absolutely convinced that Dr. ______________ will be very productive in his future research activities, as he has been, and that he will greatly contribute to the national interests of the USA. Therefore, I fully support and recommend his application.

Sincerely yours,

Professor ___________
